VIDEO: Stolen Cars Crushed (Added 11/08/06)

Authorities in San Diego are hoping to stop street racing for good, and they just unveiled their newest weapon against it, car crushing.  The car in the video is being crushed at an auto recycling plant.  According to police the most frequently stolen cars are Hondas and Acuras and the brands bought most by street racers.

And when those racers burn out the motor or transmission they tend to replace them with stolen ones.  Police usually confiscate the stolen parts but then give the car back to the owner.

Now however, officials say under California law, they can destroy the vehicle if it has a stolen part in it.  Authorities believe that car crushing will break the auto theft cycle.
