VIDEO: See How One Surrogate Mom Is Helping Raise 20 Newborn Pups (Added 1/5/07)

By Nate Crossett

A western New York family has been looking forward to their dog's new puppies for months now, but a last minute problem changed all that.  Luckily, a friend was able to help out.

Her name was simple. It was “dog.”  She gave birth to fourteen puppies. Twelve survived but due to complications, she didn't.

But the twelve little Newfoundland-Saint Bernard puppies needed milk from their mom. They were getting weak.

Luckily, Laura Pufpaff found a surrogate. Her friend's dog just had puppies. So Laura asked if that dog, already a proud mother of eight puppies, could be a surrogate mom for these orphans. It worked.  So now, Laura along with family and some friends are caring for 20 three-week old puppies.

The craziest moments here are at feeding time. That's when all the puppies are transported by clothes baskets from their beds in the laundry room to the blanket in the living room for feeding.

Luckily, Laura has some help, including her cousin Kari.  And despite the round' the clockwork, Laura and crew are happy too. Happy all this worked out.

It's something they know "Dog" would be proud of and grateful to this foster mother for caring for her puppies when she couldn't.
