James Homer deBruin*

James H. deBruin, of DeWitt, NY died Sunday March 7, 2010 at Iroquois Comfort Care.

He was born in New York City, raised in Caldwell, NJ. He graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in 1940, received 2 degrees from Syracuse University and attended Yale. Mr. deBruin lived in the Syracuse area since 1940. He was a geologist, free lance writer and construction manager. He served as Deputy City Engineer and Disposition Officer for the City of Syracuse. He was the Construction Manager for Hutchings Psych Center and the Van Duyn Home & Hospital and taught Judo at the Syracuse YMCA in the 1950’s. Mr. deBruin enlisted in the U.S. Army Combat Engineers in 1941, serving in the 106th Infantry Division, in the European Theatre receiving 4 Battle Stars. He was an 8-gallon Blood Donor.

Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Anne Laylon deBruin, a son, Grant of New Hartford who works at WKTV NEWSChannel 2 and a daughter, Sarah Zavatsky of Florida and 6 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sons, Scott and Jay and his sister, Virginia deBruin Croom. Dearest to his heart were the everyday moments he spent with his beloved wife. They were married, Nov. 14, 1975 in St. Paul’s Cathedral, Syracuse, NY Private services will be at the family’s convenience. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O.
