FYI with Bill Worden

WKTV News

In this week's edition of FYI, NEWSChannel 2's Bill Worden tells us about the sixth most common type of internet fraud...fake check scams.

There are many ways the scammers play this game, but essentially it's a stranger who e-mails you proposing to send you a check and have you wire money in return.

Here's the deal...if someone out there you don't know who wants to pay you by check, but wants you to wire money back...beware, that's a scam.

First of all, the check you receive will be counterfeit and even bank tellers have been fooled by these things.  And because you're responsible for the checks you deposit, you are responsible to repay the bank the money the crooks stole against the bad check they wrote and you deposited.

Remember, just because the bank releases money on a check you deposit, that doesn't mean the check is good.

Banks have some simple warnings:

--There's no reason whatsoever for someone who's giving you money to ask you to wire money back...period.

--Just because you can withdraw money from a deposited check doesn't mean its good, even if its a cashier's check.

--If someone wants to pay you for something, insist on a cashier's check for the exact amount, preferably from a local bank.

Remember, if you have any ideas or quick-fixes on anything you'd like to share, send them to Bill at bworden@wktv.com  Include just your first name and the town where you live and he may use them on air.
