UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The countdown is on. The Boilermaker Road Race is one week from Sunday, and a record number of runners have already registered. According to race spokesperson Mary MacEnroe, a record 12,974 people have registered for the 15k race.
To make sure the course is in perfect shape for the record field, members of the Boilermaker Race Committee went on their annual pre-race run early Saturday morning.
A week before the 33rd Boilermaker Road Race, comes the 33rd Boilermaker Committee Run. Sixteen members ran the entire race. Boilermaker Race Executive Director Tim Reed says many of these members have ran this pre race run every year since the race began in 1978.
By committee, a foursome crossed the finish line in front of the brewery together Saturday morning. Reeds says the members say the course looks in great shape.
Here are the latest numbers on registration for the 33rd Boilermaker.
12,974 have signed up for the 15k, 2,421 for the 5k, 434 for the NEWSChannel 2 8k walk and 20 for the wheelchair division.
MacEnroe says that's a 13% in the 15k number of registrants and up 21% in 5k.
