UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - If you felt the earth shake a little bit today it was probably the feet of 17,000 runners competing in 34th running of the Boilermaker. Newschannel 2 at 6 provided full insight and recaps from the day that was.
Morocco's Ridouane Harroufi won the 2011 men's 15k boilermaker race by out kicking Kenya's Peter Kamais down the stretch. Harroufi finished the race in 43 minutes and 30 seconds. Harroufi also won the race back in 2009.
In the women's division, Alice Timbilili of Kenya also won her second Boilermaker title, her first win was also in 2009. She finished in 48 minutes 40 seconds.
As the runners pressed on this afternoon, volunteers also found themselves busy. Newschannel 2's Caroline Gable took us from the Dodge water stop all the way up to mile nine. Our coverage continued with Newschannel 2's Gary Liberatore, who took us to mile two of the course, also known as International Mile. Don Shipman and Megan Koskovich provided insight from the focus after the race, the post race party and even Newschannel 2 photojournalist Keith Hunt did a little research into the numbers of today's race. Did you know we sweat as much as 1 liter an hour? For 13,000 runners that comes out to 5,151 gallons of sweat, which would easily fill a 15 foot round pool, 4 feet deep.
