International Mile

Date and Time:
Sunday, July 10, 2011

Location:
MILE 2

About the event:
Imagine hearing the native sounds of faraway countries and cultures. You’ve just entered mile 2, the International Mile. The International Mile is coordinated by the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees, and sponsored by Mohawk Valley Community College to showcase Central New York’s rich cultural diversity. As you run, you’ll see bands and dance groups representing cultures from around the world. Along with the performers, there will be 192 flags of the United Nations' member states represented along the mile.

The Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees has formed an International Mile Running Team sponsored by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, made up of current and former refugees, staff and community members. This year’s team includes refugees from Burma, Sudan, and Iraq. Any member of the community is welcome to join and support the wonderful diversity that Utica has to offer.Members of the International Mile Team will also have the opportunity to join the Boilermaker's Elite Runners at a pre-race dinner taking place on Saturday, July 9 at the SUNY IT campus. (This is unconfirmed at this time).

Anyone interested in receiving more information or getting involved with the International Mile Running Team should contact the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees (315) 738-1083 or click here.
