14,000-runner cap reached, Boilermaker 15K registration now closed

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Boilermaker 15K Road Race closed out Saturday as the 14,000 registered runner cap was reached, the largest field in Boilermaker history.

This is the earliest the race has sold out, and Boilermaker officials have been warning that this point would come early.

The 14,000- runner cap was increased this year from the 2011 cap of 13,000 runners. Several people who wanted to run were left out of last year's race.

Boilermaker Executive Director Tim Reed said the cap is not an arbitrary number. He says a lot of thought and input from directors from different parts of the race are considered.

He says that no waiting list will exist this year. because of the problems it caused last year. Reed called it a "logistical nightmare."

"We have had a number of meetings with Directors who deal with various aspects of the race to arrive at the number" said Race Director Jim Stasaitis. "We want to give as many people as possible the chance to run the race while maintaining the quality people expect."

Nearly 1,400 runners are registered for the 5K Road Race, which takes place the same morning as the 15K. A cap of 4,000 has been set for this race, so it offers an opportunity to still participate.
