Boilermaker Expo moving to MVCC

By WKTV News

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - After years of taking place on the grounds of the Masonic Care Community, the Boilermaker Road Race is now moving to Mohawk Valley Community College.

Boilermaker Road Race officials announced Friday that the 2012 Boilermaker Health and Fitness Expo will be held on the Utica campus of Mohawk Valley Community College, in the Robert R. Jorgensen Athletic and Events Center.

The 2012 Expo will take place July 6-7. Race officials cited MVCC's indoor location and parking availability as primary reasons for the move.

"We are incredibly thankful to the Masonic Care Community for their support over the past 15 years," said Tim Reed, Executive Director of the Boilermaker. "They have helped boost the Expo from a runner-specific event to a larger community celebration."

Robert Raffle, Interim Executive Director of the Masonic Care Community, says "We have been proud to host the Boilermaker Health and Fitness Expo. During that time, our Community has welcomed the Boilermaker to our campus. A variety of our staff, from grounds crews to maintenance, administrative and dietary, have worked to make the Expo an annual success with a significant contribution in costs and services covered by our facility since 1997."

Raffle continues, "The Masonic Care Community has played a major role in helping this event grow and benefit our community. We also understand the need to move this event to a larger, enclosed venue that will accommodate the thousands of runners, their families and friends who attend the Expo each year. We are in full support of the Boilermaker Committee's decision and they can count on our continued support."

Randall VanWagoner, Ph.D., president of MVCC, says that the college is looking forward to hosting the Expo. "The Boilermaker has been and will continue to be a significant opportunity for MVCC students and employees to engage with our community. We have greatly appreciated the hospitality and service that the Masonic Care Community extended to all the exhibitors and guests at past Health and Fitness Expos, and I look forward to working closely with them and with the Boilermaker to make the 2012 Expo an event worthy of the tradition of success that the Masonic Care Community has established."
