Boilermaker Health & Fitness Expo draws big crowd on Boilermaker Saturday

UTICA, N.Y (WKTV) - East Utica is the sight of the start of the Boilermaker and it is also home to 'everything boilermaker' leading up to it.

The 15-K race on Sunday begins on Culver Avenue, and just blocks away, the Masonic Care Community campus is where runners pick up their packets for the two days prior to the big race, and is also home to the Boilermaker Health & Fitness Expo.

Expo Coordinator Chris DelMonte says it's a family atmosphere. She says, "we want everyone to come and have a good time." She adds, "they can go get their B.M.I. (Body Mass Index) checked, they can get their blood pressure checked, and we have lots of other vendors, we have about 80 vendors here on campus." Vendors of all types were onhand, promoting better health.

Some visitors here have their own favorite part of the Expo. 10 year old Cassandra Adams of Frankfort paused when asked what her favorite part was, "ummmmmm they have free breakfast...that's nice."

We caught up with Leslie Smith of Deerfield outside of the "Beef Up Your Health" Tent. The New York Beef Council was onhand once again promoting people to eat beef.

Smith gladly wears her shirt from last year which reads "Real Women Eat Beef', and wears it proudly, "just to promote beef because beef is a sponsor of the Boilermaker, and beef is a good thing to eat before you run, full of protein, and helps you really get goin."
