Local wheelchair participant eyes title

By JASON POWLES

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - It's a wide open race for the men's wheelchair division in the 2012 Boilermaker road race. Five-time winner Krige Shabort is not returning. Neither is last years second place finisher Joshua George. That leaves the door open for Utica's Hermin Garic.

Garic, 22 years old, is a 2005 participant in the Go The Distance program. Last year Hermin finished third overall in the men's division. "It means everything, its been something I've been dreaming about since I did the Boilermaker." says Garic.

Wheelchair division coordinator Gary Roback feels Garic has an excellent chance to take home the title. " He's driven. He's just so focused. He's out there every day and he's not even reached his maximum potential. He can really excel beyond where he is."

Garic would be the first local men's wheelchair winner since Colin Dye from West Winfield in 1991.
