National Distance Running Hall of Fame induction part of Boilermaker weekend

By WKTV News

(WKTV) - The 12th class of the National Distance Running Hall of Fame will be inducted as part of Boilermaker Weekend 2014.

The class includes two-time champion of the New York City marathon -- Tom Fleming. He's also won the Los Angeles, Cleveland and Toronto marathons.

Kim Merritt started running when there were no girls on her high school or college track teams. She's the first and only woman to win the New York City, Boston and Honolulu marathons.

And Fred Wilt is a 10-time national champion with many cross country accolades.

"Every year, we look at the list of those who have been nominated and narrow it down to four people in three categories," said Mary MacEnroe of the National Distance Running Hall of Fame. "We send the ballots out to the original people who voted and all past inductees and they vote on who they want to join the Hall of Fame."

The 2014 induction ceremony is happening at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at MVCC in the Shafer Theater.
