Sneakers versus barefeet...what's better?


UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Running sneakers have evolved immensely over the past few decades and today, you can pick from a range of brands, types and styles. The type of shoe that is best depends on each individual person, and Podiatrist Dr. Mark Schug said, all human beings may wear different shoes because of the differences in our anatomies.

The new craze known as, "the barefoot running," craze began with shoes like the Nike Free Runners. These shoes allow a light and airy feel, and people who wear them, swear by them.

Schug said that to each their own, but if you are used to one type of sneaker, you need to ease into the lightweight kind.

"For a person starting out, or a seasoned runner wanted to start with the minimalist shoes, start out very gradually, because it truly is a different gate that can throw them off...A person who has been running a while in a traditional running shoe, they should probably just stick with."

Schug is a runner himself, running the Boilermaker Road Race twenty-seven times. He said people should look out for three main elements when it comes to sneakers.

"Shoes are broken down into categories...motion control, stability and cushion and depending on the persons foot type is what would be best for them."

Doctor Schug also suggests changing your sneakers every 300 to 400 miles.
