WKTV - With 28 wheelchair racers signed up, this years field is the deepest yet according to coordinator Gary Roback.
"We worked hard at it all year around to try to recruit people and get people here." Gary said at the wheelchair recpetion on Thursday night. "We have a good contingency of local athletes that continue to come back and we've got a lot of wheelchair challengers, people that have won wheelchairs in the past. So you add all that together and it's a real good field."
Returning is four time defending champion Krige Schabort is back to defend his title and will likely be challenged by Paralympic Gold Medalist Josh George. Amanda McGrory and Ellie Komanecy are the top two females in this years group.
Locally, Hermin Garic is the racer to beat. He finished in just over 46 minutes last year. He will join Jimmy Joseph, Mike Olsen, Nick Neuman and Ed Bradley as Boilermaker local veterans in the race.
The Wheelchair Race begins on Sunday at 7:45 a.m., 15 minutes before the 15K takes off.
