Irish Festival wraps up fifth year; Saranac Irish Red Ale sold out

By ANDREW DONOVAN

FRANKFORT - The Great American Irish Festival is wrapping up its fifth year Sunday. The Festival, held at the Herkimer County Fairgrounds, began their final day with a special Irish Mass attended by almost 2000 people.

Being debuted at the Irish Fest, the F.X. Matt Brewery's latest creation, Saranac Irish Red Ale. As of Sunday, they are completly sold out of the brew. The Brewery said the beer's future will be based upon its popularity at this weekend's event; popularity that seemed to be high.

"Well the attendance is way up from what we've had in years past it was great weather on Friday and great weather early Saturday and we had a little bad weather Saturday night and ended up closing at 10:00 with the prediction of 60 mile an hour winds, but it's really been a good year," said Matt Sullivan, the Festival's Director.

Irish food and Irish-themed merchandise are all being provided by vendors. Dozens of companies and organizations from the local area and across the nation came to what is now one of the top ten Irish Fests in America as well as the fastest growing Irish Festival.

Sean- You sounds so ignorant with that comment. This is a family-friendly event that honors the Irish Culture- one of the largest ethnic groups in this area. While there is drinking at the event, I've yet to see anyone throwing up at the event nor have I seen anyone even getting rowdy or uncontrolable. The Festival is a fantastic time and well organized. You're missing out by going... but if you're that negative, no one there is missing you.

This year's Great American Irish Festival was incredible. It will be very hard to outdo this year, but Matt Sullivan can really do a great job of it!

Sean Oharski is likely not familiar with the Irish Festival. There is a lot more culture than one would expect if they are only familiar with Irish stereotypes. The mass alone speaks volumes about proud Irish heritage. The clothing, jewelry, and other merchandise were outstanding as usual. Food and beverage was plentiful and delicious. The music selection was diverse and high quality, and the massive crowds were clearly having a great time! (Barleyjuice was awesome!)

Okay. So we came all the way from Philadelphia to perform at your shin-dig, and were promised a GREAT crowd and one WONDERFUL beer from the fine folks at the Brewery. WOW!!! You really understated BOTH!!! We can not thank the fine folks that ran the Festival, the GREAT crowds that attended, and the supportive coverage that the media gave the event. We can only wish to be back again and share the festivities with you all again some time! Thank you Utica and Central New York!!!
