Tomato pie and half moons originally from Philly and New York City?

WKTV News

UTICA - A travel magazine is claiming tomato pie originated in Philadelphia.  But Utica residents say no way!

Antonio Zenzillo of Napolis Bakery says he's traveled, but hasn't seen tomato pie elsewhere.  "I'll go to Albany and people don't know tomato pie out there," Zenzillo said.  "For Philly to say that, maybe there stuff is a little different."

Arrive Magazine, a publication for AMTRAK recently reported that tomato pie is a Philadelphia born recipe. And according to the author of this article, half moons originated in New york City as black and white cookies.

Holland Farms Owner Marolyn Wilson says their is a difference between half moons and black and white cookies.  "The black and white cookies are actually a different kind of cookie," Wilson said.  "They're not a cake cookie like we make up here. Half moons started in this area and of course are a big seller for us.  We now ship half moons all over the country because people who leave the area can't find them."

Anyway you slice it...Utica residents are not happy about another city stealing credit.  Ed Lasek's son brought tomato pie back to school with him.  "My son was away at college and he brought back tomato pie constantly when he would come home for Christmas and the whole school would gather at his room ready to eat tomato pie because that was the only person on campus that would bring it," Lasek said.

John Judge just simply does not buy the City of Brotherly Love's claim.  "I've been to Philadelphia, a lot of times, and I've never seen tomato pie," Judge said.

Joshua Piersal shares Judge's skepticism.  "Philadelphia is a bunch of liars," Piersal said.  "They're a bunch of idiots, they're in Pennsyltucky."

And Frank Elias is more concerned with who does it best, rather than who did it first.  "they can debate whether it's from Utica or not but the fact of the matter is, we have the best tomato pie and half moon cookies," Elias said.

I was raised in the Mohawk Valley and have been living in the Philadelphia area for the past 24 years. I have never(or rarely) seen a tomato pie on a menu in the Philadelphia (Delaware Valley) area. If they do offer a tomato pie, it is nothing like the Mohawk Valley version. PS- I think my grandmother made the best!

Is it my imagination, or have the Hemstrought's half-moons shrunk a little in size (re: sheets of half-moons sold in Wal-Mart and Hannaford)??? Marolyn's half-moons at Holland Farms have more of a "cake" texture to them versus Hemstrought's "brownie" texture. Both are good, though! Tomato pie? Hard to tell; so many copy cats out there. Napoli's is good.

Who Cares??? Why don't we focus on creating more jobs (other than minimum wage), reducing the outrageous Sales tax and stopping arson rather than concerning ourselves with these unusable space wasting articles?

There are a few places in the Albany area that have tomato pie, but it is nothing like back in the Utica area. I remember the corner grocery store used to have it in a box on the counter, from DeIorios Bakery, wrapped in wax paper. Tony's Pizza in New York Mills had good pie a few years ago, is Tony's still there? BTW, it should be eaten cold!
