Utica Zoo celebrates 95th birthdayUTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - One of Utica's well-known attractions hit a milestone Saturday. The Utica Zoo turned 95 years old. State Assemblywoman RoAnne Detito presented zoo officials with a proclamation. Those involved with the zoo say funding these days, whether from the state federal or local level is hard to come by. No matter what city you are in, it is becoming harder and harder to keep zoos open. Beth Irons, the executive director of the Utica Zoo said, "Zoos in general, you think about having to do things that you don't want to think about having to do, down sizing, closing off some areas temporarily, and you fight the good fight everyday. " The zoo's executive director says to make sure the zoo sees many more birthdays, the zoo has to not only maintain its current relationships, but to continue finding new avenues for future funding. |
