UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The weather was perfect for a nice brisk walk Sunday morning, and that's what about 4000 Central New Yorkers did, and they did it for a good cause.

The American Cancer Society's annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer was held at The Masonic Care Community, and estimated crowd of about 3000 people were expected and it looked like they got at least that.

The Holland Patent cheerleaders were among those who took part, but this event they are part of is something much bigger than a football game.

Chris Lewis, a two time cancer survivor says this is awesome, "Oh, we're not alone and we all need to come together as a community to support cancer research and to support American Cancer Society and to support people that are going through breast cancer."

Kathy Peters, the event manager and director of special events with the American Cancer Society says this walk is not only for the survivors and those stricken with breast cancer.

She said, "There's also the caregivers. They are those people who feel helpless in wanting to help their relatives or their friends or their coworkers who are diagnosed with breast cancer, and it's a way for them to deal with it as well."

Besides the support this walk gives, it raises a lot of money. The walk last year raised $225,000, and it also raises awareness.

Peters says, "October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and so the awareness is there, we want to include that for all year so that people do know that they need to be screened, they need to take care of themselves, and to help those folks that are around them."
