UTICA & NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - Local law enforcement is working hard to keep the treats sweet and the tricksters out of trouble this Halloween.

This weekend, Utica and New Hartford police are stepping up patrols, and say the key to staying safe is really pretty simple.

"Basically, use common sense...and you will have a safe and enjoyable Halloween again this year," said Utica Police Chief Dan Labella.

Sex offenders will be off the streets this weekend in Utica. All 96 "Level 3" sex offenders in the city will have signs on their doors that state, "No Candy At This Residence." Chief LaBella said this is the second year the sex offender initiative is in place.

"We had nearly 100% compliance last year," LaBella says.

In New Hartford, police said they will be diligently patrolling neighborhoods.

"We're well equipped to deal with the tricksters of Halloween night," said Chief Robert Philo of the New Hartford Police Department.

Philo also suggests that parents add reflective vests to their kids' Halloween costumes so they can be seen in the dark. Philo also suggested that everyone who is out and about Saturday night carry a flash light, walk facing traffic, and only trick or treat at houses with the porch light on.

Police also want to remind parents to check all of their kids' candy. If any treats look like they have been tampered with, they say you should contact the police.

If you don't feel like trick-or-treating outside this weekend, Utica Police will be passing out candy at the James Street Public Safety center from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday night.
