VERONA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Lance Corporal Jeremy Lasher had another job when he wasn't serving his country - and that was serving as a firefighter in Verona.

According to the Department of Defense, Lasher, 27, of Oneida, was killed on Thursday, July 23, while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

The Verona Fire Station has paid tribute to the fallen hero, setting up a memorial in his honor, which includes Lasher's firefighting helmet.

Lasher was killed along side Cpl. Nicholas G. Xiarhos, 21, of Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts. They were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Lasher is the fourth local servicemen to be killed in action this year alone, and the tenth serviceman from the Mohawk Valley to be killed in action since 2003.

At a dignified transfer ceremony at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware Saturday afternoon, a Marine Corps carry team loaded a transfer case containing the remains of Lance Corporal Lasher into a transfer vehicle.

Funeral arrangements have not been finalized, but will be handled by the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home on Main Street in Oneida.
