Area veterans benefit from Scrap For Vets program

NEW YORK MILLS, N.Y. (WKTV) - Many people in our area got rid of some old appliances and scrap metal that's been laying around their homes, and they helped area veterans at the same time.

The event called Scrap For Vets was held in across from the New York Mills village offices on Main Street.

People dropped off washers, dryers, freezers and refrigerators along with miscellaneous copper, brass, steel and aluminum.

The organizer is a veteran and the founder of Feed Our Vets. Michelle Synek of the Feed Our Vets program says, "I work here in the village, so we thought, we'd start here having a village wide scrap day. We got a hold of the mayor he more than gracious enough to give this property to use, and we're getting calls, great, we're picking up, we're getting people dropping off."

100 percent of the proceeds from the scrap metal will be used to help feed local veterans.
