UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - An author from New York Mills was signing copies Wednesday at BOCES in Utica of his new young adult novel, "Crazy Eights."

Gary Porcelli is a retired English teacher from the Utica City School District, where he taught for more than 30 years.

Porcelli says that during his years in the district, he found that one of the most common issues for students was peer pressure, fitting-in and the consequences of getting involved with the wrong group, all of which inspired the novel.

"I wanted to get the message to kids that it's okay to be yourself and stand up for what you believe in, even if it isn't the way the crowd would go," Porcelli said.

He said the book is geared toward students in grades 6 through 10.
