In an effort to promote literacy, comprehension and social interaction amongst the young and old, first and fourth graders at Kernan Elementary School exchanged periodic letters with roughly 25 to 30 senior citizens at the Westside Senior Center.

It was the inaugural year for the Best Buddies pen pal program, which began in January.
