For the Good's Community Garden initiative receives $25,000 grant

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Community Garden's initiative in Utica is blooming, thanks to a $25,000 grant from Wal-Mart.

"For the Good" was established three years ago, when gas prices and rising costs were making it difficult for low income residents to put food on the table.

The garden project not only provides fresh food for the community, it also brings people of different backgrounds together to work as a team.

"Our motto for the gardens is 'building community as we grow good food' and as everyone knows, we have a very diverse community in Utica and the gardens provide a neutral territory and appreciate each other because everyone is working together to produce the food," said President and CEO of For the Good, Inc. Cassandra Harris-Lockwood.

Harris-Lockwood says the money is coming at a perfect time - the City of Utica did not give the project any money this year.

Along with hiring a garden manager, For the Good plans to plant fruit trees in the near future.
