Grand Marshal of Utica's July 4 parade crosses one more thing off bucket list
UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The city of Utica announced plans for the 2013 Fourth of July parade and officials say they credit one special resident with saving it.
"I'd like to introduce our grand marshal for 2013, Mr. Michael Kelly," said Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri to a round of applause Thursday.
Michael Kelly, 18, will now get to cross one more thing off his bucket list - taking part in a parade. Kelly has cystic fibrosis and made a list of roughly 214 things that he would like to accomplish during his lifetime.
The parade was in danger of being cancelled this year, according to the mayor, but by Michael stepping up, they had a great reason to keep it going.
"If you were thinking about being in the parade, I think here's your reason to be in the parade," Mayor Palmieri said. "To show the support for not only the city of Utica, but to embellish Mike's bucket list and make this the best parade that we're going to remember in a long time."
The Fourth of July parade kicks off at 6 p.m. at Armory Drive and Culver Ave, with entertainment at Proctor Park running from 5 - 10 p.m., including fireworks.
