Historic Herkimer Home safe from closing in 2011

DANUBE, N.Y (WKTV) - The historic Herkimer Home is no longer in danger of closing this year.

Senator James Seward and Assemblyman Marc Butler announced Thursday that the site will reopen this year as scheduled. A $100,000 grant was secured to preserve the piece of local history.

Seward and Butler agree that the volunteers from the Friends of Herkimer Home group are vital to the home's future.

In January, Assemblyman Butler said there were signs that the Herkimer Home may be on the state's hit list.The General Herkimer Home was closed in 2010 for a week by then Governor David Paterson. Now, new Governor Andrew Cuomo has urged the State's Office of Parks and Recreation to trim its budget.
