Ilion prepares for annual New Year's Eve ball drop

ILION, N.Y. (WKTV) - New Year's Eve. just isn't the same without a ball drop, and instead of staying home and watching a ball drop on television, you can ring in the new year with one in Ilion.

The Ilion New Year's Eve Ball Drop is growing so much that the Fire Department and the Village had to move the ball to London Towers. The village's lighting department is getting in on the fun, as well, helping to rig the sphere eight stories into the air.

Acting Deputy Fire Chief Larry Delgrego says he tried to make the ball look as much as the one in Times Square as he could.

"We got a sheet of plywood, lights, mirrors, and put that together and it's been working ever since," Delgrego said.

"To bring people together in a community atmosphere, trying to give families and members of the community something to do for New Year's Eve," said Deputy Fire Chief David Paddock.

The New Year's Eve bash in Ilion starts at 9 p.m. on Friday night.

DJ John Seymour will entertain the crowd of about 200, and the Ilion Housing Authority will be on hand with some goodies.
