Mattresses donated to families in need

Many local families will get a better night's sleep thanks to a local effort by the Compassion Coalition.

A $7,000 grant from the Mele Family Fund went to purchasing mattresses for 140 families who may be in need of them.

The local bedbug infestation in 2009, along with a high poverty rate has created the high demand for mattresses among low-income families.

"We just know from our work here at Compassion and going into homes and seeing children sleeping on sheets on the floors, we knew the need was great," said Charlie Sweet of the Compassion Coalition.

Sweet says there are still many families out there in need, so they plan to hold another round of mattresses donations in the near future.
