New, green life for home in Town of Ava

AVA, N.Y. (WKTV) - A house that otherwise would be destroyed will be seeing new life in the name of the environment and charity.

Oneida County Habitat for Humanity is in the midst of an environmentally sustainable deconstruction project in the Town of Ava, where at any given time you will find roughly a dozen volunteers at the site across from the landfill.

An open house at the site was held Wednesday, where we learned that the mission of the project is to take the home apart and rebuild it, instead of having it demolished.

"Deconstruction will take this property that would normally be demolished and end up in a landfill and this is a great alternative to putting materials into the landfill," said Lewis LaBella of Oneida County Habitat for Humanity. "We're also creating a wonderful project for our organization."

The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority and Bonacci Architects are assisting with the project.
