VERONA, N.Y (WKTV) - The Oneida Indian Nation honored area veterans on Saturday out at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino.

Fort Drum Garrison Command Sergeant Major John McNeierny was the guest speaker at the veterans recognition ceremony.

This is the eleventh year the Nation has held the event and this year a total of about 500 people attended, including a few hundred veterans and their families from four area counties.

Margaret Splain, an Oneida Nation Turtle Clan member said, "We're very grateful for the time they served and what they gave up for our freedom so this country can do the things that we're doing right now."

The Oneida Indian Nation is also donating $1,000 to the Leo B. Wheeler Chapter of Disabled American Veterans in Utica.
