Students at Martin Luther King Elementary School honor the life and mission of their namesake

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) -On Friday, Martin Luther King Jr Elementary School celebrated the man and the holiday for which their school is named after.

This year's theme was "kindness and service."

Sandy Wright from the Thea Bowman Center was honored at the assembly. She's spent her life serving the community as an educator and the Director of the Thea Bowman Center in Utica.

Teachers at MLK say revisiting King's life and mission are important for students to learn year after year.

"He has made a change in our world," said Third Grade Teacher Clotilde Roman. "We invited our parents to come out today because, really, it's inspiring what Dr. Martin Luther King has contributed to our world."
