Winners announced at 11th annual Chili Challenge to benefit Red Cross

ILION, N.Y. (WKTV) - The 11th annual Chili Challenge took place Sunday at Francesca's in Ilion. Professional and amateur chefs competed for the title of "Best Chili."

The Chili Challenge is a top fundraiser for the Mohawk Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross. Proceeds from the event will help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies in Herkimer, Oneida, and Otsego Counties.

American Red Cross Executive Director Jennifer Balog said, "Even though we are a non-profit, we don't get funding from the government. Because of that, we actually ask for support from our communities and that's why we have the Chili Challenge. The funding goes directly to for those services for emergency services."

NEWSChannel 2's Don Shipman was the celebrity chairperson of the event.

Dominick's Deli was the "People's Choice Award" in the Restaurant Division.

Salvatore's/Sorrento's chili was the "Most Unique" and P.K.'s chili was "the Hottest."

In the amateur competition, Frank "Rusty" Brown won the "People's Choice" and Assemblyman Marc Butler's recipe was voted "Most Unique."
