World Refugee Day celebrated in City of Utica

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Thursday was a big day at The Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees as they celebrated World Refugee Day.

The day is marked to raise awareness for refugees around the world and the persecution, conflict and violence these people endure before arriving here.

The celebration was at the DeSales Center Auditorium in Utica with hundreds of people in attendance to see displays on international music, art and dance.

"Utica is really a city for immigrants," said Svetlana Derevemets, Volunteer Coordinator for the Refugee Center. "Probably a lot of people supporting us, a lot of people helping us at the Refugee Center, so as the volunteer coordinator I can see how many people in utica are really helpful."

Just this week, a Zogby poll found Utica to be one of the most welcoming communities for refugees.
