Frevo Festival on Saturday, February 11th at the 2012 Winter Carnival. Beginning at 9 p.m. and lasting until close, area businesses will host some great bands free of charge for adults over 21.
Cooley’s Stone House Tavern will feature Albany-based band Folding Sky, while Loose Change will liven the atmosphere at the Cooperstown Back Alley Grill. Meanwhile, those at Doubleday Café can listen to some classic rock performed by Carizmo, and The Pratt/Sherman’s Tavern will feature the return of fan favorite Scattered Flurries.
“Saturday night is a great way to relax and listen to some great music. The bands never disappoint and they are all performing within a short walk from each other,” said Carnival co-chair Kim White.
Some favorite annual events return to the Carnival in 2012 including the 11th annual Carnival Fireworks Display Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Lakefront Park. The coronation for the king and queen of
Winter Carnival will take place for the first time ever just before the fireworks at Lake Front Park’s historic bandstand. At 7:30 the old Agway Building at 28 Railroad Avenue will host the “Calypso
Clash” Carnival Cooler, featuring live music from Mike Feulner and the Bogarts.
The “Samba Dromo” Carnival Parade will kick off Saturday morning at 11 a.m. on Main Street. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday Doubleday Parking Lot will feature the “Little Rio” Festival
Tent, featuring live music by local band Goats with Narcolepsy and singer/songwriters Maurizio & Molly Durnin.
In addition to the live music, the heated Festival tent will also feature arts, crafts, food, and a live show by magician and balloon artist Joey DiDonna. Outside the tent the Parking Lot entertainment will include the annual SSPCA Dog Show at 12:30 and a book signing by the Fabulous Beekman Boys from 2-4 p.m.
Other activities abound on Saturday afternoon. The Homerun Hitting Contest returns from 2-4 p.m. in Lakefront Park, sponsored by Monster Energy Drinks, Cooley’s Stone House Tavern and
Northern Eagle Beverage.
Depending on the weather, The Clark Sports Center Classic Cross-Country Ski at 1 p.m. will bring outdoor fun for families on Saturday, while the tubing hill at Glimmerglass State Park is open from 11-4 both Saturday and Sunday.
Before the bands kick off on Saturday night, don’t miss the Duvel Pouring Contest from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Pit, or the Carnivale Lip Sync Show at the old Agway Building (28 Railroad Ave.) from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
The weekend will wrap up on Sunday afternoon with the “Diabo” Wings Contest from 1:30 – 3:30 at Cooperstown Back Alley Grill and the “Bayou Bash” Chili Contest & Carnival Closer at Brewery Ommegang’s café from 3-5 p.m., where awards will be given and a raffle prizes will be drawn.
The wings contest will feature live music by the Jelly Rolls, while the Carnivale Closer will feature the band Cuttlebone. Opening for Cuttlebone will be singer/songwriter Owen Nied.
