Event Description

(Albany, NY: Feb. 9) Thousands of college-bound students and families are starting the application process for college financial aid by completing the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

But, according to a recent survey, at least 1.7million students nationwide fail to file the FAFSA each year because they incorrectly believe themselves to be ineligible.

Many of these students would have qualified for financial aid: About a third of these students would have qualified for a Pell Grant; about one-sixth would have qualified for a full Pell Grant of $5,550.

“Start Here to Get There,” the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) campaign for student financial aid awareness is taking place now through February 25, 2012.

Throughout the campaign, HESC will inform and educate students and families about all of the financial aid opportunities available to them and promote the completion of the most important tool in securing financial aid, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, the FAFSA.

Together with College Goal Sunday New York, the New York State Financial Aid Administrators Association (NYSFAAA) and other partners, HESC is co-hosting workshops in to help students and families complete the FAFSA.
