Event Description

Herkimer County Community College’s Counseling Center and the Herkimer County Prevention Council will co-sponsor “Barely Legal: Dangerous Substances Under the Regulatory Radar".

Presenter Michael Nerney will explore emerging trends in substance abuse, including the reformulation and packaging of intoxicating products specifically designed to skirt current drug laws. Many of these substances, including bath salts and marijuana substitutes, are effectively marketed via the internet in a way that highlights their legal status and accessibility, and ignores the significant risks associated with their use. This presentation explores the various types of quasi-legal substances, the names under which they are marketed, what makes them attractive to users, and the risks they pose. Participants will consider strategies that may be effective in preventing the use and abuse of these substances.

Nerney is a substance abuse prevention and education consultant and former director of the Training Institute of Narcotic and Drug Research, Inc. He has over 32 years of experience in the fields of psychopharmacology, adolescent chemical dependency and relapse prevention.

This presentation is open to the public free of charge.
