The class will focus on the history and techniques of creating an Illuminated Manuscript. An Illuminated Manuscript is a page of text or poetry that is substituted with ornate decoration in paint and silver or gold leafing. Frequently painted with a single haired brush, these miniature paintings rival the most complex paintings. Illuminated Manuscripts are made on parchment- most commonly made of calf, goat or sheep skin. Creating egg tempera paints and ancient binders will be discussed. Students will explore the use of traditional parchment and gilding techniques to create an authentic illuminated manuscript.
