HCCC Commencement Speaker highlights perseverance

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - Area college graduation ceremonies continue this weekend, including Friday night in Herkimer, where more than 600 soon-to-be-graduates will be honored at Herkimer County Community College.

Friday's student commencement speaker will be Katie Maneen of Frankfort.

Maneen received the 2011 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence, among many other awards.

She also was captain of the college's women's track team, excelling in several events, despite having a prosthetic leg since she was a baby.

Maneen says she could have used the leg as an excuse for not being able to accomplish something, but instead used it as motivation to try to achieve the impossible.

It's also the inspiration behind her speech.

"It talks about overcoming obstacles to get here and to persevere through everything, because everyone has overcome something to get to Herkimer," Maneen said. "So I cover that you have to persevere constantly and to overcome obstacles."

Herkimer is just one of a few college commencements happening on Friday. It kicks off at 5 p.m. Friday night in the college's gymnasium.

Mohawk Valley Community College's ceremony begins at 4 p.m. at the Utica Auditorium.
