America's Greatest Heart Run & Walk kicks off with a survivor's story

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - America's Greatest Heart Run & Walk 2012 kicked off Thursday night bringing out volunteers, organizers, and those that have suffered or are suffering from a heart related condition.
Krysta Derosia from New Hartford was born with a heart defect called Truncus Arteriosus. With just a single blood vessel leading out of her heart rather than the typical two, she had to undergo surgery at a young age.
"When I was little my family on my Dad's side put a team together when I was having my first surgery called 'Team Krysta,'" says Krysta.
This year Krysta will be walking and inspiring thousands of others to do the same as a Red Cap Ambassador, what Race Director Jim Stasaitis says is a vital part of the race's success.
"We get them to tell their stories and that gives us the inspiration to do what we do - raise money and help fight heart disease," says Stasaitis.
Krysta is excited to now join the many volunteers that hope to raise $1,119,000 this year.
"It shows me that I'm not alone and no matter how much I feel like it I'm never alone," says Krysta. "And there are people who care."
