"Stuff The Bus" makes its way to Herkimer County

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - NEWSChannel 2, along with radio stations from Roser Communications (KISS-FM, Bug Country, WUTQ), Birnie Bus, and Fidelis Care are joining forces once again this holiday season to collect toys for the children of Central New York. People responded in a big way Saturday outside of the WalMart in Herkimer.

The goal of the 5th annual Stuff The Bus campaign is to fill several buses and collect more than last year's total of 8,500 toys. The toys will be distributed in December by Catholic Charities, Kids Oneida-Herkimer, UCP and the Keys Program.

Joann Darrow, an employee for Birnie Bus says, "It's got to make you feel good. We've had some little kids bringing toys on to help other children, it sure does. It's nice that they're giving, that children are learning the meaning of giving instead of receiving."

NEWSChannel 2's news director and anchor of the Live at Five Newshour Steve McMurray was on hand Saturday to help load the bus full of toys.

You still have three more chances to help us help kids! The Birnie Bus will be set up to take toys the next two Saturdays: December 3, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the Rome WalMart and December 10, 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the Toys R Us in New Hartford.

On Saturday, December 10, from 6:00 to 8;00 p.m., the Teddy Bear Toss will take place at the Utica College hockey game at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

You can also drop off toys at the Utica or Rome Birnie Bus locations during their normal business hours. In Utica, that's at 2245 Dwyer Avenue and in Rome, it's at 248 Otis Street, in the Griffiss Business Park.
