Christmas Eve brings in big business for fish markets

WHITESBORO, N.Y. (WKTV) - Besides malls and stores, another busy place this Christmas Eve are area fish markets.

The owner of the Whitesboro Fish Market on Main Street in the village says this is by far the store's busiest day of the year, as all types of seafood are popular items for many Christmas Eve feasts.

In Whitesboro, as in many places, orders are lined up by pickup time.

Everything is cooked fresh, but the preparation for this day started days ago.

Mike Walter, of the Whitesboro Fish Market said, "We stock 1000 pounds of fish, shrimp and scallops and then we have to thaw it all, so we can fry it and cook it, and then we have to pre-package all of the stuff that is frozen, that the people want frozen."

The traditional Italian Catholic Christmas Eve dinner is called the Feast of the Seven Fishes, so that is a big reason why so many different types of seafood are sold on Christmas Eve.
