Police and retailers in New Hartford have a very calm Black Friday

By GARY LIBERATORE

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - The congestion on Commercial Drive on Black Friday in past years has been immense. People often have reported waiting in the long line of cars for thirty to forty minutes, even last year. But this year, shoppers and police say things seemed to go much smoother.

New Hartford Police Officer Matthew Sica says he was surprised by the calmness, "doesn't seem as congested, the roads don't seem as congested, I can say usually we're backed up all the way from Consumer Square to the mall, but doesn't seem to be that big of a problem."

Meanwhile at Walmart, changes there made things very smooth for customers. Shoppers no longer had to wait outside in bad weather, mainly because Walmart was already open.

his year, Walmart was open on Thanksgiving for the first time and never closed, so anyone who wanted a door buster, got in line inside the store Thanksgiving night, they were handed their tickets for the door busters around midnight and had to wait until 5:00 this morning to get their items.

Sarah Passalt of New Hartford told NEWSChannel 2, "this year was a lot less chaotic, yeah, I would totally say.." Shopper Nicole Kantor of New Hartford says Black Friday shopping has become a tradition for her and her friends, and she look forward to whatever chaos comes there way, "this is my favorite day of the year, it's the only day I shop , it's crazy , it's fun and we just have fun."
