Berry crops ready as U-Pick Em's welcome pickers

By KATRINA SMITH

MARCY, N.Y. (WKTV) - Mother Nature made for some nerve-racking days and nights for local strawberry growers with rain and cool temperatures, but now the fields are full and are ready for berry pickers.

The season is lagging ten to 15 days behind last year's berry picking season but it is expected that with the late start, the season will last longer.

"There's a ton of green berries out there," said Mike Candella of Candella's Farm and Greenhouse in Marcy. "The biggest thing for people to understand is, we're a little behind, so the picking prime is probably going to be this weekend into next week and then it'll just keep going."

Candella says he expects the season to stretch through July 4.

Candella's Farm and Greenhouse on Old River Road in Marcy is one of several "U-Pick Em" sites recommended by the local Cornell Cooperative Cooperative Extension.

Other sites recommended by Cornell include:

*Swistak Farm on New London Road in Verona

*Tassleberry Farm on Stop Seven Road in Westmoreland

*Savickis Farm on Route 12 in Kirkland
