Elementary students get first-hand account of WWII from vets
WHITESBORO, N.Y. (WKTV) - Many students are used to learning in classrooms and from textbooks, but on Wednesday, some fortunate fifth graders in Whitesboro got a first-hand lesson in WWII from the men and women who served in it.
Several local World War II veterans from the Masonic Care Community shared their personal experiences on the battlefield with fifth graders at Hart's Hill Elementary School on Wednesday.
One of the guest speakers was an Army Paratrooper who took part in a daring raid that saved more than two thousand U.S. Military troops.
The teacher who helped organize Wednesday's meeting of veterans and students wanted to help both take advantage of a dwindling opportunity.
"As the years have gone by, the kids have less and less opportunity to be able to hear first-hand accounts of what life was like during that time period," said Joanna Charlebois, Fifth Grade Teacher at Hart's Hill Elementary.
