UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Children in the Utica School District raise thousands of dollars each year for the Stevens Swan Humane Society's 'Pennies for Pets' fundraiser.
On Wednesday, students at General Herkimer School in North Utica got a personal thank you from Daniel, an eight-year-old beagle currently living at the shelter.
The school principal says taking on shelter animals as a 'pet' project helps the young students become more civic-minded.
Jerry Kraus, spokesperson for the Humane Society also talks to kids about animal abuse and neglect, and when to let someone know if they feel an animal is being mistreated.
