Oneida County Vietnam Vets honored at Elks Club

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Vietnam veterans in Utica were honored Sunday with dinner at the Elks Club.

Organizers tell us 70 soldiers from Oneida County were killed during the war.

The Department of Defense has instituted a program, commemorating 2012 as the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.

Veterans Service Chairman Ed Potrzeba said, “As some of us know when the Vietnam soldiers returned home, it wasn't such a friendly reception and we're making up for that slowly. The Department of Defense is doing that in this commemorative program for several years. It will be going on we're happy to be one of the first in the area to start it off.”

Along with the veterans, Prisoners of War, Gold Star Mothers and those Missing in Action were honored at the dinner as well.
