Red Cross honors everyday heroes at flag raising in Rome

ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - March kicks off National Red Cross month, which is why a flag was raised Thursday in the City of Rome to honor the community's everyday heroes.

Rev. Dr. Tom Hast started giving his time to the Red Cross eight years ago when Hurricane Katrina struck a chord with many and began a wave of volunteerism. Hast said there is a place for everyone to be a hero with the Red Cross, whether you want to help out with a hurricane, go to a fire, help out in the office, donate money or just give blood.

Regardless of how you help, the need for that help is high.

"With everything that's going on today, there's a need for volunteers in all organizations," he said. "With sequester, the government can't take care of everything. People my age have time to give and I think we should give."

Hast raised the flag as part of a proclamation Thursday morning at Rome City Hall.
