Schuyler Historical Society hosts cemetery clean-up

SCHUYLER, N.Y. (WKTV) - It was a gorgeous day Saturday for people to get outside and do some late summer cleaning and that is just what a number of volunteers did in Herkimer County. Members of the Town of Schuyler Historical Society started a project to clean up several abandoned cemeteries around town.

Saturday, they began with the Harrington/Tanner Cemetery on Newport Road.

Organizers feels this is important, not only for the environment but to help preserve the history of the area. Event Chairperson Wendy Weeks said, "These are public records in a way. Sometimes when you go to a clerk's office, they may not remember who lived where, or their ages or their death. By finding the stones, we can help implement more genealogy of the area."

The goal of the historical society's project is to cleanup all 13 abandoned cemeteries in Schuyler.
