Theatre Historical Society stops in Utica to glimpse The Stanley

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Some out-of-town theater buffs made a long trip to Utica on Thursday for the sake of visiting the Stanley.

The group was from the Theatre Historical Society out of Chicago and the trip to Utica was part of their annual conclave, touring famous theaters across the United States.

Event Coordinator Karen Colizzi Noonan says that the group works to identify the "best" theaters before making the long trip and she said The Stanley certainly qualifies.

"It is a marvel. It has been the center of Utica for so long," Colizzi Noonan said. "We all know the story that it was neglected for years, in danger of demolition. You look at it today and wonder how that could ever be a possibility."

From here, the group will travel to Western Massachusetts to see some of the theatrical landmarks there.

Previously, the group hade visited Sacramento, Grand Rapids and Indianapolis.
