Governor directs flags to be flown at half staff in honor of fallen soldier

BURLINGTON FLATS, N.Y. (WKTV) - Flags will be flying at half staff in honor of a local man killed in combat overseas.

Governor David Paterson is directing that flags on State government buildings be flown at half-staff on Monday, March 2, in honor of Burlington Flats resident Army Corporal Michael L. Mayne, who was killed in action on Monday, February 23 in Balad, Iraq.

Corporal Mayne was a member of the 5th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team. The unit is part of the 25th Infantry Division based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Corporal Mayne and two other soldiers died when they came under small arms fire from insurgents while on patrol.

"all New Yorkers are saddened by the death of this young soldier, and we grieve along with his friends, family, and fellow soldiers," Governor Paterson said. "we are forever indebted to Corporal Michael Mayne for the sacrifice he has made on behalf of all citizens of the United States. His service will be honored and never forgotten."
